Natural Texture That No Other Silk Has
Dupioni's slubbed surface comes from irregular yarn created when two silkworms spin their cocoons together (hence "double cocoon" — dupioni). These natural imperfections are the feature, not a flaw. Each meter of fabric has a unique texture pattern. This is the silk you choose when you want visible character and tactile interest.

Built-in Color Play — No Printing Needed
Iridescent dupioni uses one color in the warp and another in the weft. The result: the fabric appears to shift between two colors as it moves under light. This effect is structural — it comes from the weave, not a coating or dye. It cannot fade or wash off. For products that need visual impact without printed patterns, iridescent dupioni does the work.

Fashion and Interiors — Dupioni Works for Both
In fashion: suits, structured dresses, bridal garments, evening jackets. In interiors: curtains, drapery, cushion covers, upholstery accents. Dupioni has enough body and crispness for both applications. We supply fabric for garment production and also for interior textile projects.

FAQ
Silk dupioni is a crisp, medium-weight silk fabric with a naturally slubbed (irregularly textured) surface. The slubs come from double cocoons — when two silkworms spin their cocoons together, creating thicker, uneven yarn sections.
The slubs are natural. They occur when silk yarn is reeled from double cocoons, producing irregular thick and thin spots along the yarn. In dupioni, these slubs are considered a desirable feature — they give the fabric its distinctive character and visual texture.
Iridescent dupioni is woven with different colored threads in the warp and weft. This creates a dual-tone color shift effect when the fabric moves or catches light at different angles. The color play is permanent — it's part of the weave structure.
They are closely related. Both are crisp silk fabrics with a slubbed texture. Shantung (also called "silk shantung") typically has finer, more subtle slubs. Dupioni has more pronounced, irregular slubs. In many contexts, the terms are used interchangeably.
Yes. Dupioni is one of the most popular silk fabrics for curtains and drapery. Its body and crispness create a rich, structured drape. The iridescent color play adds visual depth when light passes through. We supply dupioni specifically for interior projects.
Stocked colors: 50 meters. Custom dyeing: 100–200m per color. Embroidered dupioni: MOQ depends on design.
Dry clean recommended. If hand washing, use cold water and silk detergent. Dupioni can water-spot — avoid splashing. Iron on the reverse side while slightly damp. Store flat or rolled to maintain the crisp texture.
Silk Dupioni — Origin, Texture, and Selection
Why Dupioni Has Slubs
When two silkworms spin their cocoons too close together, the silk threads become entangled, forming a "double cocoon." Yarn reeled from these cocoons is thicker and more irregular than standard silk yarn. When woven into fabric, these irregularities create the raised, textured slubs that define dupioni. Every meter has a slightly different texture — this natural variation is part of its value.
Dupioni vs Shantung vs Taffeta
| Dupioni | Shantung | Taffeta | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texture | Pronounced slubs | Finer, subtle slubs | Smooth, no slubs |
| Body | Crisp, medium | Crisp, slightly lighter | Crisp, rustles when moved |
| Sheen | Moderate, textured | Moderate, smoother | High, smooth gloss |
| Best For | Bridal, suits, curtains | Suiting, blouses | Formal gowns, linings |
Handling Tips
- Cut with sharp scissors — the crisp weave cuts cleanly.
- Pin within seam allowances. Pin holes may be visible on dupioni.
- Press on the reverse side. The slubbed surface can flatten under direct heat.
- Water-spotting is a known issue — keep fabric dry during cutting and sewing. If spots occur, steam evenly across the entire surface to blend.
