Every Silk Base — Now with Stretch
We add spandex to all major silk weaves: charmeuse, satin, crepe de chine, chiffon, georgette, and velvet. You get the same look and hand feel of the original fabric, plus the comfort and fit of elastic recovery. Tell us your base fabric and we match the right spandex ratio.
2-Way or 4-Way — Match Stretch to Your Design
2-way stretch (cross-grain only) works for most fitted garments — dresses, blouses, pajamas. 4-way stretch (both directions) is for performance wear, costumes, and activewear where full range of motion matters. Specify your stretch direction when ordering and we adjust the construction.
Same Dyeing and Printing Options as Standard Silk
Stretch silk takes dye and print the same way as non-stretch silk. All our color matching, Pantone dyeing, and digital/screen printing services apply. The spandex content does not affect color accuracy or print sharpness. Same quality, same process, just with added stretch.
WHY WORK WITH DREAMSILK
We manufacture custom silk products and fabrics for brands in 50+ countries. From fabric selection to finished goods, everything is produced in our own facility - giving you one point of contact, consistent quality, and shorter lead times.

FAQ
3–8% spandex depending on the base fabric and stretch requirement. Charmeuse and satin typically use 3–5%. Velvet may use up to 8% for 4-way stretch. The rest is 100% mulberry silk.
Yes. 4-way stretch is available in stretch silk velvet and can be produced in other bases on request. Standard stretch silk charmeuse, satin, and crepe de chine are 2-way stretch (cross-grain).
Quality stretch silk maintains its recovery through normal wear and washing. We recommend cold water hand wash or gentle machine cycle to preserve elasticity. Avoid high heat drying.
Yes. Stretch silk accepts digital and screen printing with the same color quality as non-stretch silk. The spandex does not affect ink adhesion or print clarity.
Stocked colors: 50 meters. Custom dyeing: 100–200m per color. Custom printing: 50m per design.
Machine wash on gentle/silk cycle in a mesh bag with cold water. Do not tumble dry. Lay flat or hang to dry. This preserves both the silk fiber and the spandex elasticity.
Stretch Silk Fabric — Construction, Selection, and Handling
How Stretch Silk Is Made
Stretch silk is produced by weaving silk yarn together with spandex (also called elastane or Lycra) filament. The spandex is typically inserted in the weft direction for 2-way stretch, or in both warp and weft for 4-way stretch. The silk content (92–97%) determines the fabric's surface appearance and hand feel, while the spandex (3–8%) provides elastic recovery.
Stretch Silk vs Regular Silk
| Stretch Silk | Regular Silk | |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | 92–97% Silk + 3–8% Spandex | 100% Silk |
| Elasticity | 10–20% stretch with recovery | No stretch (or minimal natural give) |
| Fit | Body-contouring, comfortable | Relies on cut and drape for fit |
| Sewing | Use stretch needles and slightly longer stitch length | Standard silk needles |
| Care | Cold wash, no high heat — protects spandex | Cold wash, silk detergent |
| Price | Slightly higher due to spandex blend | Standard silk pricing |
Sewing Tips for Stretch Silk
- Use ballpoint or stretch needles (size 70/10 or 80/12) to avoid snagging the spandex.
- Slightly longer stitch length (3.0mm) prevents puckering on stretch fabric.
- Use a walking foot or Teflon foot to feed the fabric evenly.
- Test stitch tension on a scrap piece — stretch silk requires lighter tension than regular silk.
